Biographical Sketch

Postdoctal Associates

Ziqing Lin, PhD


Ziqing received his BS and MS from Tsinghua University in analytical chemistry. He came to the States to pursue his Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University, focusing on MS instrumentation, ambient ionization methods, and gas-phase ion reactions. He joined the Ge group in 2015 and is currently working on MS-compatible surfactants and implementation of both ion parking and ETD/ECD for top-down proteomics. He is also a Latin ballroom dancer in his spare time.



Yanlong Zhu, PhD


Yanlong received his BS from University of Science and Technology of China. He came to Wayne State University to pursue his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, focusing on IRMPD action spectroscopy, computational chemistry and instrumentation. He joined the Ge group in 2018 and is focusing on top-down proteomics including both method development of multi-dimensional liquid chromatography strategies and instrumentation to implement new tandem mass spectrometry on the ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometer. He likes hiking and watching movies.



Graduate students

Wenxuan (Vege) Cai, 4th Year
Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology Program


Wenxuan (Vege) received her BS in the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. She is interested in the regulation of cardiac funtion and regeneration. From the Shantou City in Southeast China, Vege is a crazy tea lover. She also likes to design and do programming.



Yutong Jin, 4th Year
Chemistry Program


Yutong received her BS degree in Chemistry from Nankai University. She is interested in mass spectrometry and top-down proteomics. She likes traveling and collecting postcards. 




Bifan  Chen, 4th Year
Chemistry Program


Bifan graduated from St. Olaf College, where he majored in Chemistry and Asian Studies. His current research interests include novel instrumentation, method development, and their applications on biological issues. In his spare time,Bifan likes to play the violin, watch basketball games, and hang out with friends.



Kyle Brown, 3rd Year
Chemistry Program


Kyle received his BS in Chemistry and BA in mathematics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He moved to Madison in 2015 enrolling in the Chemistry PhD program with an interest in characterizing membrane proteins. His hobbies include playing soccer, basketball, guitar, reading, and brewing beer!  




Trisha Tucholski, 3rd Year
Chemistry Program


Trisha received her BS in forensic chemistry from Penn State University in 2015. Currently, she is interested in improving chromatographic methods for top-down proteomics. She loves to drink coffee at any time of the day. Her hobbies include yoga, reading, and painting. 




Zhijie (Abe) Wu, 3rd Year
Chemistry Program


Abe received his BS in chemistry and BA in mathematics from the University of Rochester. He joined the Chemistry PhD program in Fall 2015 as a chemical biology student. His research interest focuses on utilizing nanoparticles to isolate and characterize kinases and kinome. He enjoys cycling in the summer time and traveling. 




Samantha Knott, 2nd Year
Chemistry Program


Samantha received her BA in biochemistry from Lawrence University and joined the Chemistry department as a chemical biology student in Fall 2016. Her research interests are currently in cancer proteomics and the characterization of post-transcriptional modifications. Her hobbies include running and drinking lots of coffee. She also has a studio art minor and continues to enjoy oil-painting.




Tim Tiambeng, 2nd Year
Chemistry Program


Tim received his BS in Chemistry from the University of California, Irvine. He joined the Chemistry PhD program in 2016 as a chemical biology student.His current research interest is in developing a better cardiac troponin assay using nanomaterials and top-down proteomics. He enjoys swing dancing and road trips to national parks!




Stanford Mitchell, 1st Year
Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology Program


Stanford received his BS in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology with departmental honors in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire. He joined the Ge Lab in the Fall of 2017 and is interested in using mass spectrometry to facilitate regenerative biology and medicine research. Stanford is an expert cat herder. Outside of the lab, Stanford likes to read, compose music, and paint!




David Roberts, 1st Year
Chemistry Program


David received his B.S. in chemistry and B.S. in mathematics from the University of California San Diego. David joined the Chemistry Ph.D. program in Fall 2017 as a materials chemistry student. His research interest is in the integration and application of nanomaterials to biological systems: interfacing the fields of chemistry, biology, and materials science. He enjoys coffee, soccer, and playing video games.

Undergraduate students

Zachery Hite, Junior


Zach is a 3rd year undergraduate student studying Biochemistry. He is originally from the Twin Cities and began working with the group in September of 2015. In his free time his interests include photography and music.


Sudharshanan Govindaraj Ramanathan, Junior


Sudharshanan is a junior at UW Madison currently pursuing a double major in Computer Engineering and Computer Science. He currently works on debugging and improving the current offline software MASH Suite Pro and MASH Explorer programmed in both C++ and C# using Microsoft Visual Studios. Also, he is working on incorporating new deconvolution and search methods such as pParseTD and pTop into MASH. His hobbies are Badminton, Painting and watching Soccer.


Cyrus Colah, Senior


Cyrus is a 4th year undergraduate at UW-Madison studying Chemical Engineering. He joined the group in March, 2015 and is currently working with Leekyoung Hwang on the synthesis of nanoparticles for use in proteomics.


Hannah Karp, Senior


Hannah is a 4th year undergraduate student in Honors Biochemistry. Hannah joined the Ge group in November 2016. She grew up in Princeton, New Jersey but has lived in the Midwest for several years. Her free time interests include cooking, working out and reading.


Yiran Yan, Junior


Yiran is a junior student major in biology from China. She loves traveling and watching animates during free time.


Paige Pistono, Junior


Paige is a 3rd year undergraduate student studying Biochemistry and Spanish. She is currently working with Trisha on improving chromatographic methods for top-down proteomics. Her hobbies include spending time outdoors, playing volleyball, knitting, running, dancing, and travelling.


Andreas Kyrvasilis, Freshman


Andreas is a 1st-year undergraduate studying Molecular Biology at UW-Madison. Originally from Athens, Greece, he has lived in Madison since 2012 and joined the group in December 2017. In his free time, Andreas likes to explore the outdoors and hang out with friends.



Visiting Scholar

Yu Liang, PhD


Yu obtained the bachelor’s degree from Wuhan University in 2005, majoring in Applied Chemistry. She was awarded Ph. D degree in 2011 from Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, majoring in Analytical Chemistry. She works as Associate Professor in Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Her research is focused on chromatographic separation, ultrasensitive nanoLC-MS technique and proteomic analysis.
