Yanlong Zhu, PhD
Yanlong received his BS from University of Science and Technology of China.
He came to Wayne State University to pursue his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, focusing on IRMPD action spectroscopy, computational chemistry and instrumentation.
He joined the Ge group in 2018 and is focusing on top-down proteomics including both method development of multi-dimensional liquid chromatography strategies and
instrumentation to implement new tandem mass spectrometry on the ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometer. He likes hiking and watching movies.
Kent received his B.S. in computer sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1990. Kent joined the lab in September 2018, and is working on the development of the MASH Explorer software, with plans to also work on metabolomics software in the future. He grew up in Green Bay, and has called Madison home for three decades. In his free time, Kent enjoys cycling and international travel (preferably combined); model railroading; long walks with his wife, Sue; and playing with his miniature schnauzer, Theo.
Kyle Brown, 5th Year
Kyle received his BS in Chemistry and BA in mathematics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He moved to Madison in 2015 enrolling in the Chemistry PhD program with an interest in characterizing membrane proteins. His hobbies include playing soccer, basketball, guitar, reading, and brewing beer!
Trisha Tucholski, 5th Year
Trisha received her BS in forensic chemistry from Penn State University in 2015. Currently, she is interested in improving chromatographic methods for top-down proteomics. She loves to drink coffee at any time of the day. Her hobbies include yoga, reading, and painting.
Zhijie (Abe) Wu, 5th Year
Abe received his BS in chemistry and BA in mathematics from the University of Rochester. He joined the Chemistry PhD program in Fall 2015 as a chemical biology student. His research interest focuses on utilizing nanoparticles to isolate and characterize kinases and kinome. He enjoys cycling in the summer time and traveling.
Samantha Knott, 4th Year
Samantha received her BA in biochemistry from Lawrence University and joined the Chemistry department as a chemical biology student in Fall 2016. Her research interests are currently in cancer proteomics and the characterization of post-transcriptional modifications. Her hobbies include running and drinking lots of coffee. She also has a studio art minor and continues to enjoy oil-painting.
Tim Tiambeng, 4th Year
Tim received his BS in Chemistry from the University of California, Irvine. He joined the Chemistry PhD program in 2016 as a chemical biology student.His current research interest is in developing a better cardiac troponin assay using nanomaterials and top-down proteomics. He enjoys swing dancing and road trips to national parks!
Stanford Mitchell, 3rd Year
Stanford received his BS in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology with departmental honors in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire.
He joined the Ge Lab in the Fall of 2017 and is interested in using mass spectrometry to facilitate regenerative biology and medicine research.
Stanford is an expert cat herder. Outside of the lab, Stanford likes to read, compose music, and paint!
David Roberts, 3rd Year
David received his B.S. in chemistry and B.S. in mathematics from the University of California San Diego. David joined the Chemistry Ph.D. program in Fall 2017 as a materials chemistry student. His research interest is in the integration and application of nanomaterials to biological systems: interfacing the fields of chemistry, biology, and materials science. He enjoys coffee, soccer, and playing video games.
Elizabeth Bayne, 2nd Year
Elizabeth earned a BA in Chemistry from Smith College in 2014 and spent four years afterwards working in late stage drug development at Pfizer. She joined the Chemistry Ph.D. program at the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 2018 in the analytical path. She is interested in exploring precision medicine for HCM patients using a top down proteomics approach. In her spare time, she enjoys yoga and live music.
Austin Carr, 2nd Year
Austin graduated from the University of Tulsa with his B.S. in Biochemistry in 2018. He joined the Ge lab in the fall of 2018 and is interested in membrane proteomics. Austin enjoys watching the Packers, Badgers hockey, reading, and playing guitar.
Eli Larson, 2nd Year
Eli received his B.A. in chemistry at Gustavus Adolphus College in 2018. He is interested in the development of novel instrumentation and multidimensional liquid chromatographic methods for use in biological separations. He enjoys cycling, woodworking, and learning Latin.
Jake Melby, 2nd Year
Jake received his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh and then joined the Chemistry PhD program in Fall 2018 as an analytical chemistry student. He is currently interested in developing novel techniques to enable high sensitivity top-down proteomics. His hobbies include biking, reading, rooting for Pittsburgh sports teams and hanging out with friends.
Benjamin Wancewicz, 2nd Year
Ben received his BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of California, Davis. He is interested in using mass spectrometry to link the metabolic disorder in diabetes with the associated contractile dysfunction. He enjoys playing board games, going for a bike ride, and baking.
David Moreno, 1st Year
David received his BS in Chemistry from the California State University at Los Angeles and joined the Chemistry department in Fall 2019. His current research interest includes surfactant development to aid in topdown proteomics. He enjoys photography and cycling.
Emily Reasoner, 1st Year
Emily received her BA in Chemistry from Luther College. She joined the Chemistry PhD program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2019 as a materials chemistry student. She is interested in novel applications of nanomaterials in biological systems, bridging analytical chemistry, materials science, and chemical biology. In her spare time, she likes to spend time with friends, her dogs, and listening to music.
Timothy Aballo, 1st Year
Tim received his BS in biological sciences and pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Rhode Island in 2016. His research interests focus on analyzing changes in the sarcomeric protein landscape in developing mice to elucidate mechanisms for endogenous heart regeneration. Outside of lab, he enjoys hiking, cooking and creating good memories with friends.
Michael Sivanich, 1st Year
Michael received his BS in Chemistry from University of Minnesota in 2018 and then spent a year and a half working at Covance for early phase drug development. He is currently in the analytical chemistry department with interest in chromatography methods with relation to proteomics. He enjoys hiking, cooking, and traveling all over the world.
Will earned his BSE in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2017. After working in research for a year, Will joined the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health M.D. program in 2018. He will be working with lab members to test the lab's cardiac troponin assay on clinical samples. In his free time he enjoys running, hiking, and reading.
Chance Lee Wilkinson-Johnson, Junior
Chance is a 3rd year undergraduate student studying chemistry and working with Abe. He transferred to UW Madison after 2 years at Madison College. He is a veteran, and plans to get my BS, then commission to be a pilot in the US Air Force, before returning to get a graduate degree. Mis hobbies and passions include computer gaming, kayaking, hiking, target practice, reading, painting/drawing and dancing.
Christian Eken, Junior
Christian Eken is a 3rd year undergraduate student at UW-Madison. He is currently majoring in Biology and Agricultural and Applied Economics with aspirations to go to medical school and earn an M.D. and M.P.H. He is currently working with Kyle and understanding the versatility in the use of both top-down and bottom-up proteomics. Christian enjoys spending time with friends and cutting hair in his free time!
